The end of Day 1 brings sad news of teams retiring from the race. Team Supplierpipeline arrived at T1 to the news that, er… sorry, still no bikes!! They had also dropped from 4th place to around 10th before reaching T1 because Greg was having bad tummy problems and Scott was “definitely coming down with something, whereas Denise was stronger than ever. Despite all that, they were still planning to wait at T1 for their bikes and then continue with the race,Not to Be
Alas, around midnight we were told that they had finally surrendered to the gods of AR and accepted that they were not meant to finish this race. It´s hard not to think fate played a trump card. You deserved so much better, guys!
One team that did make it onto their bikes was our very own Team Sleepmonsters.com, but not for long as they have reportedly suffered a knee injury (which one of the eight knees is not yet clear) while somewhere between CPs 12 & 13. They called it in from the town of Manch Real sometime yesterday evening.
Joining Team Medilast Sport on the exhaustion bench are Team Gallaecia-Bugarrent. They too must have struggled with the super-fast pace. Team Coastzone.dk have also retired due to illness but, apparently, a team to watch with a bit more experience under their belts.
Staying Power
Bringing up the rear of the field, and 4 hours behind the next team, is Team Estoril PT XPD Race. They completed the canyoneering in the dark and have yet to reach T1. Hats off to them for sticking with it as that water was freezing even in the sunshine!!
Let´s hope Day 2 sees far less casualties.See All Event Posts
