The Inaugural 6633 Extreme Ultra
6633 Ultra - Day two
Martin Like / 21.03.2007

Day 2 …..Finally the Dempster opened this morning and by 10.30am the athletes were lined up on the start for the resumption of this anticipated awesome race. Sadly 1 athlete, Gerard Verdenet, was pulled from the event overnight due to a severe case of frostbite to his face. The decision was accepted with reluctance, but whilst this event is intended to be a test of an extreme nature, the safety and well being of the athletes is paramount.
Similar to yesterday, Cavyn Hobday took an early lead from the start pulling away from Mimi Anderson and in the first 10 miles had a lead of about ½ mile. An impromptu checkpoint was created at Rock River Campground approximately 25 miles North of the Arctic Circle by which time Mimi had regained the lead albeit only by a few minutes. It should be noted that the tandem pair of Denise and Jon Whyte were first in and out of Rock River but with comparatively favourable terrain that wasn’t unexpected. Both the front runners only took a short break before proceeding to the Nemesis of the event – Wright Pass.
Coming into Rock River in close succession but a little while behind the front runners were a fairly tight group containing Steve Evans, Howard Cooke, Steve Reeves, Mark Perrier, Katherine Hay-Heddle and Francis Beauvallet. Most of these took advantage of the fire and basic food that was made available. Currently carrying the red lantern at this point is Sue Kersley who is participating in her first extreme Ultra and what a baptism of fire it for this Welsh Lass!!
