Descent to Sub-Zero

Those fortunate teams still in the race spent the whole night on their bikes… a welcome relief after an unforgiving day spent on their feet. The bike route took them to one of the highest points of the race, not quite to the summit of Sierra Magina. The climb however was not the problem. For teams that arrived at the top in the early hours of the morning, it was coming down that proved the biggest challenge.

Freezing Fast
Over night the temperature dropped to a piercing -5 degrees. The descent off the mountain took teams around an hour and a half. That is 90 minutes of doing very little other than occasionally clutching the brakes, and with not much in the way of warm clothing! Upon arrival in T2 the teams were very much in need of warmth. Even so, some decided to resist the pull of their sleeping bags and tents erected especially for them.

Cold Companionship
Buff Coolmax arrived at T2 together with Team Finland at 03:35 and both decided to push on and warm up on foot… each not wanting the other to gain any advantage. Or perhaps they were just enjoying the companionship?See All Event Posts
