6633 Ultra - Day 4

Day 4……With the race reduced officially to 4 runners and 2 on a bike plus the route now being down in the Mackenzie delta where conditions should be better this is going to be an easy day for me as Race Director – Like flippin heck!!!!
Last night at 21.44 Mimi left Fort McPherson for the comparatively short stage of 38 miles to Tsiigehtchic. Calvyn opted for a slightly longer stay leaving in the early hours this morning at 1.20am. Once again Calvyn found that his slightly extended stay in the comfort of the Fort MacPherson Rec Centre wasn’t quite enough and was forced to bivvy out little more than 9 km out of town.
Denise and Jon on the bike are now on roads where in theory they should be able to motor along – but alas that assumption doesn’t take into account the amplification of the cold that riding in these freezing conditions causes. Making the very most of the hospitality offered in MacPherson the duo headed out a little after 6.00am but on their trip to Tsiigehtchic were thwarted in their attempts to proceed along the route at speed and were frequently having to stop cycling and walk purely to generate some body heat.
Of the runners Steve Evans was the next to leave, leaving at 7.10am. Everyone watching this race here in the Arctic North is very impressed with Steve’s methodical, steady and very controlled race – he is just totally at ease with the conditions and everything about him.
Howard was last back onto the trail at 7.50am and where Steven is probably the most in control athlete, Howard has got to be the most cheerful runner. On the occasions his face is uncovered there is always a smile and usually a joke or two.
The road to Tsiigehtchic is predominately flat with only a few minor rolling climbs and descents. But the continuing biting cold still makes progress a painful process. See All Event Posts
