A Stroll Round Yellowknife

Once the decision to have very short last stage had been made, it gradually became shorter and finished up as a run into the centre of Yellowknife and back again.

There was no competitive element to today’s run, it was symbolic finish to the race and an opportunity to race into the state capital in company. Race Director Scott Smith, and Ray Zahab accompanied the 5 Diamond ‘300’ finishers along with a few other key staff from the race. “What a morning, said Smith, “just couldn’t be better!

In truth it was the kind of weather he’d hoped for during the race, brilliant sunshine (as there has been every day) and a mild temperature of around -5C. [It’s surprising what you get used to … now -5C seems positively tropical and people were wandering around with coats and hats!]

The jogged off gently together towing the sleds to start with then leaving them to collect later. Often the jog turned to a walk and as they reached town the sight of a coffee shop was too much to resist and they all dived in, before heading down Main Street and back onto Great Slave Lake for the last time.

After an easy hour of exercise it was time to cross the finish line for the last time and pose for photos with race officials and sponsors, and the two winners of the K-Rock 160 race.

Tomorrow the winners all have an invitation to a very special prize giving. They are being flown several hundred kilometres north to the Ekati Diamond mine for a specially hosted tour and to be presented with their diamonds. Then it’s back to Yellowknife in time for the race party sponsored by Bacardi.See All Event Posts
