The Athletes Have TEN Maps

The race organizers revealed the 350k course for the 2007 Baja Travesia. Each team received 10 huge maps and thanks to mytopo.com they are printed on waterproof paper. And it's a good thing since the forecast still calls for rain and high winds for the start of the kayak.

Teams will start the race with a paddle from Ensenada (approximately 11k) to the Island of Todo Santos. You've probably heard of it as a famous big surf spot. From there teams will turn South and paddle with a tail wind to La Buffadora (the famous blowhole) and finish the 56k kayak at La Bocana.

At La Bocana the teams will transition to a 50k bike on dirt roads and small trails. More information on each section will come in future updates.

Teams are being seriously warned of high winds, big swells and cold weather predicted for the start. It's raining right now in Tijuana to the North and we're hoping the storm stays North.

Team Wild Burros! Paul Ablett, said "We're just happy to have the maps and see the course, it's a bit of a relief to know what's coming."

Barrie Adsett of veteran team Equinox said he wasn't worried about the cold water and predicted big swells even though he plans to paddle an open surf ski.

Overall the teams seem a little more relaxed and ready for what lays ahead. Right now they are all packing gear boxes and looking at maps. We are telling them all to get some much needed rest.

More from the start tomorrow.See All Event Posts
