Baja Travesia
Paddling the Pacific
Karen Lundgren / 27.03.2007

Race Director, Paul Romero and Brazillian Adventure Photographer, Bernardo Rodrigues returned from Todo Santos a little green in the face. “The waves very big, 2 meters high, said Bernardo. Paul returned with a wet cell phone and confirmed that the seas were quite epic. How was the kayaking out there Paul? “Well it was big, but most of the teams were handling it quite well. They all said they were fine and while some had a little water to pump out of their boats, they were all happy. Team Dart Nuun was the first to arrive at CP2 with a five minute lead over Kayak Lake Mead (both teams were paddling in triple kayaks). Team Stride with Tom Taylor, Claire Thompson of Canada and Luis Canseco of Mexico City were another 34 minutes behind.
After leaving CP2, one of Team Helly Hansen/Momar’s boats was washed toward the rocky shoreline leaving 2 team members stranded on a small rock island until they were picked up by a nearby fisherman. Once back at the CP Team Helly Hansen/Momar decided to forego the second paddle leg and travel with crew to the transition area. They will continue unranked.
Equinox and Sahwii arrived at the checkpoint in good condition but their nerves were a bit shaken and they also chose to continue unranked. They will drive to La Bocana and continue there with the mountain bike leg.
Team Wild Burros! put their kayaks in at CP2 and would paddle to La Bocana but also unranked because they never reached CP1.
Team Barely Legal was taking on a bit of water in the back hatch of their boat and for a second considered taking the easy route and driving to La Bocana. They instead repaired their rear hatch and continued on.
The Dancing Pandas arrived at CP2 just as the seas were at their biggest, but they were all smiles and ready to continue. Just as they were about to leave, organizers closed the paddling section because of a small craft advisory and so the Dancing Pandas will continue from La Bocana as a ranked team with a time penalty.
