Day 6…..
This might be the last report we can make before the end of the race. In a few hours time the support crew travels North on Ice Road to Tuktoyaktuk and internet connection in that “neck of the woods can at times be a little sketchy. But Hey-ho.

At 6.00am I was awaken from my slumber at Caribou Creek as Cookie and Calvyn prepared for the last section of road to Inuvik some 30 miles distant. Both are in good spirits although Cookie has been nursing an ankle injury which at the very least is slowing his progress, but there is a concern that it may prevent him getting to Tuk. As with all the participants in this event, he is one determined athlete and alongside Calvyn they departed from the checkpoint at 7.20am.

Ahead of them is the Welshman, Steve Evans, who left shortly before 3.00am and who is continuing up the route at his usual controlled pace towards Inuvik.

Inuvik marks the end of the Dempster Highway, the only highway in Canada that passes over the line of the Arctic Circle. (I should point out at this stage, that a highway might conjure up an image of flat tarmac roads with street lights illuminating the way – the truth is far different. The Dempster can be best described as a glorified forest track whose sole aim is to provide limited access to the very remote few settlements culminating in Inuvik). Alas for the poor competitors the end of this road doesn’t mean the end of the race. They still have a mere 120 miles to cover along an Ice road that is seasonally created on top of the Mackenzie River all the way to the wonderfully named hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk. See All Event Posts
