6633 Ultra - Day 7

Day 7….
What a day of highs and lows.

Starting on a real low, sadly Cookie decided to throw in the towel after 5 hours on the Ice road. Whilst the decision to pull out was expected it was none the less very disappointing to everyone as he had raced a very sensible race and to succumb to an injury at this late stage in the race is a real beggar. Cookie being Cookie, within hours of retiring he was helping with the support work required to keep this event flowing.

Calvyn is making very slow progress up the ice road and after about 8 hours had gone little further than 20 km out of Inuvik. However, he is constantly happy and content although he will need to pick up the pace if he wants to hit the deadline of 8.00am on Sunday in Tuktoyaktuk.

Mimi continues to be inspirational. For anyone who doesn’t know Mimi let me try to briefly describe this barking mad woman. She is as slight as any person I can imagine, she loves pink, she is absolutely driven and she has been the topic of conversation amongst everyone involved in the race. She is living proof that in extreme ultra distance racing women can be mens equal and in this case can quite possibly kick ass too. Anyway enough of the waffle…. Mimi arrived about 7.00am at Swimming point and whilst being informed that she had at least an 18 hour lead over 2nd place, she once again chose to take a relatively short rest of less than 5 hours before heading out onto the ice. Closely on her tail but at times struggling to keep up was Gerard Verdenet who rejoined the race as an unranked competitor at Inuvik.
