Into the Tatra on Day One

On a crisp and sunny morning in Zakopane, the teams gathered in the center of town at the Rowien Krupowa meadow for the start.

At 10 am all teams – both Masters and Amateur categories – set off on the first stage: a short, 5 km urban orienteering race in Zakopane. Within an hour all teams had returned, left the start area and headed into the mountains.

The weather was great – sunny and not as windy as expected. En route all teams had to pass a caving section with three control points. Then the amateur teams left the Tatra mountains and moved onto an orienteering section in the Gubalowskie forest, while the Masters teams continued on the elevated mountain ridge.

Two teams withdrew around CP5. Michal Kielbasinski of Pattex Deuter Adventura had breathing problems and the team quit while ascending Mt Koñczysty Wierch, where CP5 was located. The Romanian team Neuzer-Gyilkosto Adventure went to the CP5, but descended with a race marshal down to the Chocholowska Valley.

The first night is chilling ... and we expect the leading Masters team to reach Transition Area A about 3 a.m.See All Event Posts
