MOMAR Squamish

The imposing grey prominence of the Stawamus Chief towered over every adventure racer entering Squamish to take part in Saturday’s Schick Xtreme Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race presented by Helly Hansen. The Chief, a world renowned climbing landmark with vertical granite walls, looms over the town of Squamish and racers traveling to this adventure playground were previously given an expectation of significant elevation gain for this event from Race Director Jenn Segger-Gigg. I’m sure each participant was looking at the Chief and hoping to not have to deal with that type of arduous elevation gain in Bryan Tasaka’s twenty-second consecutive Mind Over Mountain adventure race.
Bryans’ prior races have involved a paddling discipline however this event would not; the question was this: his races are around 45 – 50km in length, of which 10 – 12 km is paddling and the total course distance for this particular race was stated as 45km, so how would Race Director Jenn fill in the distance normally covered via kayaking knowing full well that navigation was going to be more of a factor in this race than any other of Bryans’ previous races?
That question was answered at the race briefing Saturday morning at Alice Lake Provincial Park when the race map was provided to the 218 racers gathered at lake side with a brilliant sun warming the morning air. The map showed provided graphic detail of every step and revolution of pedal you would be taking from Alice Lake heading east and up, then making a south, south easterly direction via logging roads, then eventually meandering westerly over logging roads, steep single track and hiking paths that would lead into Squamish: a four stage race including mystery events that had a serious of 22 check points and 45 kilometers of travel.
