On the second day of the Réunion d’Aventures 2007, the ascent to the Fournaise and the descent to the Commerson crater were challenging enough to separate the teams. The first three teams kept their lead, confirming their domination of the competition, while their two direct pursuers followed behind by an average of over two hours. Further back still, a group of five were four hours behind the leaders, followed by a second group of five who arrived early enough to make the cut-off and descend to the bottom of the crater. At 4.30 pm, as stipulated in the rules, the Commerson stage was closed, and competitors arriving after the fateful hour were automatically downgraded to the “Discovery category.
The highlight of the 2007 edition, abseiling down to the bottom of the Commerson crater – 200 meters in diameter, 235 meters in depth – was an experience unique to Réunion d’Aventures. This competition dozens of competitors to complete this sporting exploit, with all the necessary safety measures in place, and all who took part in it were delighted by the experience. This stage not only left an impression on the minds of the competitors, it step was also grueling on their bodies, as the steep descent had to be followed by a Jumar ascent over more than two hundred meters of rope.
Two other great moments awaited the leading teams who, during this second day, passed through a volcanic cave in the heart of the Plaine des Cafres, then continued on to an orienteering stage through the zone of Grand Bassin.See All Event Posts
