The 2007 Adventure Race World Championship
A Fort William Welcome
22.05.2007

As Fort William and Lochaber prepares to host The 2007 Adventure Racing World Championship (between 26 May and 2 June) 196 of the world's toughest endurance athletes, competing for the World Championship title, will parade along Fort William's High Street in their teams as part of the opening celebrations. At 17.00 on Friday 25 May, all 49 teams, from 20 countries across the globe, competing on the 500-kilometre course of rugged and varied terrain (including 25,000 metres of ascent) throughout the Fort William and Lochaber region, will show their colours before setting off on Saturday morning on their epic journey.
The parade will be lead by the Lochaber High School Pipe Band and finish at Cameron Square where The Treacherous Orchestra will entertain the crowds with their mix of traditional folk music, described as “lying somewhere in the midst of clubland and ceilidh chaos - big banging tunes with a slap-tight and funky rhythm section.
Jim Mee co-creator of the Wilderness ARC – The Adventure Race World Championship, said: 'We always get such a warm welcome from the people of Fort William and Lochaber and we want them to be as involved as possible with the event this year, the first Adventure Race World Championship to be staged in the UK. The parade, with the inclusion of the local pipe band and some fantastic ceilidh music, will be a fitting opening for the teams that are coming to Scotland from as far a field as New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and South Africa.'
At about 3.30 on Saturday 2 June there will be a homecoming parade for all the teams when they are safely back in Fort William after their gruelling expedition. This will be followed by a podium ceremony when the 2007 Adventure Racing World Champions will be crowned. Bands will play and footage and images from the race will be shown on screens in the town.See All Event Posts
