Eco Games Kenyir 2007 Adventure Race
Malaysia’s latest non-stop extreme race posed a formidable challenge for Adventure Racers

Eco-Games Kenyir is the first of two races for local teams to qualify for the Malaysian Eco-Games Series championship, a five-day race that is open to qualified Malaysian teams, as well to experienced international teams. The championship will take place October 21-26, and offers US$215,000 in prize money. This report follows the first qualifier, which took place this month.More than 40 adventure racers who participated in the Eco-Games Kenyir 2007 took on the challenge and thrived on the adrenaline rush. Before the race finished, they would be required to run through thick jungle, abseil down rocky precipice, fight through the torrents of a waterfall, and kayak as well as swim through unknown waters.
Held in Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu, the race was organised by Max Quest Sdn Bhd. The race is the first race of the three-race series of the Eco-Games Series Adventure Race which culminates with the Eco-Games Championship Race in Kedah that will be held from 21 to 25 October 2007. The event is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Participants of the race were divided into two race classes: the Solo Race Class for individual racers, covering 30km and Enduro Race Class for two-member teams, covering 90km. Even though the Solo Race Class involved a shorter distance, the challenges were no less daunting. A total of 13 teams participated in the Enduro Race Class and the Solo Race Class had 21 racers who comprised racers from New Zealand and Singapore.
The disciplines in the Solo Race Class included running, kayaking, rope skills, trail running and swimming. Enduro Race Class racers covered similar disciplines with the addition of some mountain bike along logging trails, and canyoning down the furious waters of the majestic Tembat Falls.
Armed with grit and determination, some 47 men and women who participated in the race, traversing the extreme terrain of Tasik Kenyir. Garbed in Corezone’s striking orange attire, the participants blazed through Pengkalan Gawi on a 2.5km track to their next destination, Pengkalan Utama.
From there on, participants in the Solo Race Category grabbed their kayaks and paddles for seven kilometres to the Orang Asli Island, whilst the Enduro Racers mounted their mountain bikes and cycled for more than 24km to the next check point located at the Fish Lodge.
