Battering of Boats

The excitement of this morning’s start proved too much for some – while jostling for position at the start, a loud crunch was heard and everyone caught their breath, hoping it wasn’t one of their own.

The unlucky team was The North Face. They had been t-boned by the nose of another boat (Team Barclays), their hull completely breached with a 2-inch hole halfway between the back cockpit and the tail end. They immediately starting taking on water in their rear compartment and realised there was nothing to be done except leave the start line to attend to the damage.

While they were dealing with their personal crisis, the race goes on. At about 8:15, a little later than scheduled, the horn blew and the World Champs Adventure Race officially began. Seeing the boats head off into the sun was an impressive sight indeed.
