Following concern for team safety organisers of the 2007 Adventure Racing World Championship have insured their competitors against attack from the Loch Ness Monster. The teams will swim across a bay on Loch Ness by Uruqhart Castle, with the leaders arriving tonight, and the organisers are taking no chances.

The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie as she is known locally, is one of the best-known mysteries of cryptozoology, the first reported sighting being in 565AD and depicted in the Life of St Columba by Adamnan.

Since then a number of sightings of a creature with a small head, long neck, small front fins and a humped back have been reported at the beauty-spot prompting a number of scientific explorations, none of which have provided any solid evidence of the existence of the creature.

However a lack of evidence has not reduced the interest and some people still believe in the existence of Nessie. The race organisers don\'t want to take any risks as the Adventure Racing World Championship makes its first ever visit to the UK. They said: \"We are committed to making the course as safe as possible, but sometimes a balance must be made and we therefore thought insurance might be a good idea. Of course it will scare some of the international teams, but also add extra intrigue to this fantastic race\".

Competitors from as far afield as Australia, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada and the United States will be covered with a policy arranged by the UK\'s leading event insurance specialists ESR, who also provide insurance for Edinburgh\'s world famous Hogmanay celebrations.
