The 2007 Adventure Race World Championship
Long Road to Invergarry
Robyn Ferrar / 28.05.2007

After a tough night chasing the first cut-off at T1, around half the teams either didn’t make it or simply chose to do the short course trek across Knoydart. This means the slower teams have caught up to the leaders and the field has come together again. Even so, the first team to reach T2 were Wilsa Helly Hansen. They remain on the full course – with the shortest penalty time-out at CP4 so had a head start coming into T1. While they quietly went about their transition, the first short course team arrived looking in good spirits.
Although disappointed to have been relegated so early in the race, they seemed intent on making the most of what is still a race for them. It is worth noting that the teams on the short course are still ranked, but just below those on the full course.
T2 is situated at the end of 35km virtual dead-end, single-track road, at Kinloch Hourn. On leaving the transition, the teams will cycle up a long, very steep ascent to get out of Kinloch Hourn. They’ll continue east most of the way along that winding, rolling road, and those who do it in daylight will be treated to spectacular views. Not that there are many hours of darkness, some of the international teams, like Balance Vector, expressed their surprise at just how short the nights are. All the better to appreciate “a beautiful night in the rugged wilderness.
