Transition 3 - The turning point

As the rest of Scotland awoke to a normal Wednesday morning, scattered throughout its rainy highlands, over forty teams still squelch their way through one of the most demanding courses ever faced. For most teams, the notional turning point has been the arrival at Transition 3.

Situated at the far north east of the route, at the Burlam Farm facility for Disabled Riding, this was undoubtedly the most important location they’d reached in their race so far, for many reasons.

A roof over their heads

Erected in the centre of the camping field was a giant white canopy, providing the first sheltered transition of the race. Waiting for them on site were all of their kit boxes, brought together for the first time since their despatch on the logistics trailers last Friday, and within them teams would find all they needed for the stages ahead, including fresh provisions, and for the shrewd, dry clothes.

All teams were taking advantage of the rare facilities here. Turning up trhoughout Tuesday morning, all of the leaders had caught up on much-needed rest, and began the practise of hanging their wetsuits over the rafters of the canopy to warm up before the swim stage. The commotion as clumsy competitors sorted through kit was lost on those sleeping, at this stage in the event no-one is having difficulty in dropping off.

As the racing continued, teams came and went, but the rain came and stayed. Throughout Tuesday it has been unrelenting, and as the grass around the transition has slowly turned to mud, the popularity of the canopy has grown, with as many as ten teams at a time underneath preparing for the loch crossing ahead.
