The Rain Takes its Toll on Day 4

Badenoch – the area hosting stage 6 – has been crawling with wet, shivering racers throughout the day. This stage started with the singletrack bike ride at Wolf Trax, after which the teams continued on their bikes to the bike drop-off point on the south side of Loch Laggan. They then continued on foot along the shore-side track until reaching the base of Binnein Shuas, a 749m summit, of which the last 40m must be ascended via rope and jumar.

Shivering in Their Shuas

With the rain lying heavy on the whole of Badenoch, only the bottom half of the mountain was visible from below - the business end was shrouded in ominous cloud. Merrell / Wigwam arrived at the foot and started to climb. With only around 3.5 hours of banked sleep (some of that courtesy of a sympathetic local who took them in last night) they were feeling the pace.

“We’re feeling ok said Ian Edmond, “we’re just getting whipped by the pace! There are some fast teams in this race. The instructions were to head for the summit and then follow markers leading to the rope ascend. To start with Merrell headed slightly right of their bearing. However, once above the cloud line they cut left across it. With visibility so bad, this turned out to be a good move as they soon intercepted the markers that would guide them the final stretch through the crags.See All Event Posts
