The 2007 Adventure Race World Championship
All change on route to Ben Nevis
Gary Vallance / 31.05.2007

Descending from either the Aonach Eagach ridgeline, or the West Highland Way short-course option, adventure racers have been pooling into Kinlochleven since the early evening. Situated beside “Ice Factor, the biggest indoor ice-climbing facility in the world, in an old brewery building on the banks of the river Leven, what the checkpoint lacked in liquid refreshment it made up for with a refreshing change of pace.In the predominantly dry weather of Thursday night, teams may finally be looking forward to getting back onto their bikes again, with the promise of dry trails ahead, and the opportunity to accelerate towards the ultimate goal of the finish line in Fort William.
As lead team Nike make their way towards Carn Beag Dearg on the northern slopes of Ben Nevis, transition 8 has already played host to half a dozen teams, on a mix of both long and short-course race routes. Now rejoined once more, teams are collecting their bikes and transition tubs, changing into windproof clothing, tending to minor injuries and smartly heading out into the night. With hours still remaining before sunrise, racers seem happy to tackle the technical and demanding route before light, since it gives them the opportunity to enjoy mountain biking in the dry for the first time in the event.
