Friday fever on Rannoch Moor

With the race for the prize decided early this morning, teams left on the course are planning their schedules to make the most of the long awaited fair weather. At transition 7, home of the now infamous “doubledecker deli, another short-course cut off was fast approaching, and teams conscious of the deadline had already muscled their way over the worst of the moorland portage to get through in good time.

Since the departure of Intersport at half past two this morning, teams arriving during darkness waited until breakfast before departure: Roadrunners, ISC and Buff/lakedistrictoutdoors leaving within forty five minutes of one another in various states of repair. Next to pass through were an exhausted Helly Hansen UK, followed promptly by Irish AR Denny, Salt and Pepper, Mitsubishi QuasarLontra and iRuleUK, all pausing for barely an hour, cruising through ahead of the cut off, and looking strong and in good humour.

As iRule’s Sue Smith broke a shoelace the instant she left transition, her team seemed un-phased. Their most challenging kit malfunction in the race so far came at the very beginning of the Outrageous Portage Section, when one of their kayak trolleys developed a terminal puncture. Effecting a working repair from duct tape and cable ties (aren’t they always?), they completed the stage in reasonable time: “It worked really well on the tarmac, as long as nothing needed to get past … it tended to veer a bit … sideways.

The record for the most outstanding rest stop of the race surely goes to team Fast & Light UK. Having arrived overnight via a roadside portage, and lit up like Christmas trees, they lived up to their team name and made Light work of falling Fast-asleep. After racking up almost eight hours of much-needed rest, they even managed to leave in good time before the crunch.
