Wrapping Things Up

With the last few teams having crossed the line, the rest of Saturday was spent either sleeping, or sorting through piles of wet and very smelly kit. The hall in HQ was ripe with the pungent aroma that only a 6-day race in the Scottish climate can produce. However, packing progress was slow. Some racers hadn’t seen or heard about each other for 6 days and there was a lot of catching up to do. Besides, cleaning up after a race is definitely not a job any racer enjoys.

War Stories
Some of the stories doing the rounds included storms on Ben Nevis during the night – Roadrunners Adventure needed to seek shelter for an exhausted and delirious teammate in an effort to ward off hypothermia. They were one of several teams caught in sudden storms either on the summit or on the Arrete. So close to the finish, it must have felt as though the world was conspiring against them… whereas that’s just Scotland.

One team in particular had several mechanical problems in the later stages. Tea & Medals had to get help from a local farmer when the bearings on their portage trolley seized. With smaller trolleys than most, they found this one of the toughest sections of the race. And once back on their bikes, they found they had almost no braking power to speak of and, at times, resorted to reverse bungy tow to slow each other down.

Hobbling Parade
At 3pm, everyone dropped what they were doing and hobbled into Fort William (Wayne of OrionHealth needed the help of crutches) for the closing parade through the town, although this was simply the Prologue (not another one!) for the evening celebrations to come. It was also an opportunity for some to dash into the local charity or souvenir shops for that splash of tartan to brighten up their glad rags.See All Event Posts
