200 km route with 4600 m total elevation gain
Jacqueline Windh / 20.06.2007

Galicia is the maritime region of northwesternmost Spain – easily accessible from London by a short direct flightOrganizers are pleased with the enrolment - so far 41 teams are entered in the 200 km competition that will take place this weekend. Spain's top three teams, Buff-Coolmax, Teva, and Salomon, are all expected, as are two teams from Portugal. And there are teams from elsewhere in Europe working on last-minute plans, hoping to be able to make it to Galicia for the competition.
This adventure race is for teams of three, in two different categories:
Elite is for teams with three racers who compete for the entire race, plus an assistant
Adventure is for teams of three who rotate position: two racing and one serving as assistant.
Disciplines include mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, in-line skating, and ropeworks. Total elevation gain is 4600 m, and winners are expected to take about 20 hours.
The region of Galicia, near the northern part of Spain’s border with Portugal, has its own unique culture and even its own language. The countryside and the climate are influenced by the proximity to the Atlantic coast. With the race occuring on summer solstice weekend, days are long and nights are short, providing racers with many hours of light.
Racers will pass through some beautiful and historic rural areas, and are sure to see a bit of local colour. The weekend is also the regional festival of San Juan – where locals make big bonfires and jump over them, to scare off bad luck! We’ll see if this turns out to be a useful race strategy.
