They’re Off

Teams gathered on the start line at 8.45, ready to start Adrenalin Rush 2003. Some racers stood quietly, others bounced up and down, stretched, or fiddled with their rucksack straps and trekking poles – anything to pass the last few minutes. There were hugs and kisses for friends on other teams, or from the few wives and husbands here to see their loved ones off.

Robert Finlay of Out There was in a reflective mood and suffering start line jitters. “I’m 50 soon and I’m not sure what I’m doing here. It’s crazy, quite crazy. I should be home with my wife. No doubt he felt better once he was underway. His team were dressed in full waterproofs and mini-gaiters, though there was only a little drizzle in the air. The Big Fish were even more warmly dressed, wrapped up in warm trousers and heavy coats. They were the only team carrying trekking poles for this first short run to the bike pick up point, so presumably they will carry them on the bikes through the night. Nufarm U4EA certainly stood out, wearing vivid emerald green top hats! “You have to have a sense of humour! said Keith Coffey.

Just before the start Brian Elliot held the race clock aloft so everyone could set their watches then called the team captains aside to wish them luck. Then with TV cameras and photographers pointing their lenses at them the count down began and at 21.00 exactly 25 teams with racers from 11 countries set off with a cheer. They were led out by a cyclist Gregory Elliot to guide them over the swing bridge nearby and onto the Great Glen Way. Then when he peeled off they were on their own, running up through the woods to the bike collection point, and the start of the long ride through the first night.See All Event Posts
