The Original Mountain Marathon
Whatever the Weather
Rob Howard / 25.10.2007

No one entering the OMM has any great expectations of fine weather (its best to plan for the opposite) ... which is probably just as well! The good news for the weekend is that the Met Office is not issuing any flood or severe weather warnings, and the campsites are not going to be covered in a hard frost on Sunday morning.
The Met Office forecast does not even sound too bad; “Further rain moving in on Saturday but breaking up into occasional showers and bright or sunny spells for Sunday. Windy at times. It could be worse, there have been bitterly cold races before (N. Lakes), floods (Galloway) and near hurricanes (Howgills) to deal with … but I’ve not mentioned the bad news yet …
That comes on the more detailed, and usually reliable, forecast from the Mountain Weather Information Service – and they expand on that ‘windy at times’ offering from the Met Office. Increasing to 60mph gusts is their forecast for Saturday with persistent rain later in the day and the cloud level down to 300m at worst. Sounds like those with the earliest starts will be the lucky ones!
It’ll be a windy night too (an extra hour getting buffeted about thanks to the clocks going back) with the prospect of the heavier rain clearing on Sunday, but maybe not until the afternoon – after most have finished.
So, heed the organisers warnings to go adequately prepared and don’t skimp on equipment or take that lightweight Pertex top. You’ll regret it if you do!
