Racers from 10 countries are gathered for the highest adventure race in the world, ready to take part in a 300km route of hiking, biking, paddling, rapelling, jumaring. The race begins in the town of Mulaló at the base of Cotopaxi volcano and on the first day competitiors reached the highest point of the race at almost 5000 meters, between Cotopaxi and Morurco mounts. Here’s the first of our daily news updates from this remarkable race.

29 teams started the race at 6:30 with an intense biking section, followed by intermittent trekking and biking sections. Cotopaxi volcano, the biggest active volcano in the world, and its highlands were the landscape in which the competitors had to move. The race gained altitude drastically and that affected some teams. The hallmark of the day was the rough weather with really low temperatures, rain and even snow at Control Point (CP) 2. This, added to the above 4000mts altitude, made things really hard for all teams. Team # 16, Digital Photo Express, was the first to abandon the competition; followed by a member of the team Fer Power.

Teams # 4 (Tatoo Energizer) and # 5 (Asertec Nike Orbea), took the first and second place from Control Point 1 and have been running next to each other, fighting to win time over the rest of the teams. These two teams arrived first to CP 5 18:00.See All Event Posts
