Seventeen teams coming from three continents are scheduled to be at the starting line on Monday March 24th. This year’s 400 km non-stop course will start in San Felipe, about halfway down the Baja Peninsula on the Sea of Cortez side, and finish in the town of Ensenada, on the Pacific side just south of Tijuana.

Race Directors Paul Romero and Karen Lundgren promise another great course, which will include mountain biking, trekking, canyoneering, both paddleboarding and sea-kayaking, as well as a navigational challenge in the “infamous Baja Desert cars.

DART-nuun’s winning combo of Jen Segger-Gigg, Cyril Jay-Rayon, and Aaron Rinn will be back to defend their title. Jen notes the pressure on her team this year. Now that the Travesia is part of the ARWS, a win means free entry to the ARWS Championship (in Brazil this October). But also, as returning 2006 and 2007 champions, the pressure is on them to win 2008 to make it a “threepeat.

For Jen, this is also her first big race since injuring her IT bands on a 100-miler last October.

“We’re looking forward to defending our title, notes Cyril. “I think this is one of the most beautiful races in North America. It’s a true point-to-point race where teams traverse the entire Baja Peninsula. We really love this race - maybe that’s why we’ve done so well here.

The competition will be tough – their second team DART-nuun/NW Kayaks (Glenn Rogers, Sean Clancy, Mari Chandler) will also be in the line-up and, as Cyril notes, they are also here to win.

Team Bosi Colombia (Jorge Diego Llano, Luisa Fernanda Ríos, Fernando Parra) will be pushing for their spot on the podium as well. Bosi is Colombia’s top AR team, and they carry with them years of international race experience. Jorge and Luisa are organizers of both the Bosi Travesia expedition race and 7 Cerros Medellin urban adventure (staged) race, which Paul and Karen have raced at for the last two years.

Stay tuned for more reports about the teams who will be racing over the coming days and then, starting on Monday, live coverage straight from the course.See All Event Posts
