Baja Travesia 2008
Day 1: Things are moving fast!
Jacqueline Windh / 24.03.2008

Things are moving fast! Following a very fast start, teams are starting to spread out. For the moment, don’t trust the leaderboard – teams are supposed to press a button to update the SPOT, and it seems some of them are not getting a good reading, because what’s currently up on the leaderboards doesn’t fit what I am seeing in the field. The start was at 11:30am (a latish start because the tide was out, waaaayyyyy out, this morning) – a Joe Bark Paddleboard Relay. The total stage was 5 km, divided into three sections. Each teams youngest member paddled the first third while the other two ran along the beach – then they switched, and finally on the third leg the oldest member paddled. A light onshore breeze was blowing, but nothing like the crazy gale we endured yesterday morning.
The finish was at the main beach in downtown San Felipe – still crazy from Easter weekend, with no parking for support crews, vendors hassling us, and partiers passed out in the hot sun! Paul gave me his paddleboard, so I grabbed one of the Go-Pro cameras, strapped it to my forehead, and headed out to intercept the arriving paddlers. I am pretty sure the first one in, with a good lead, was DART-nuun/NW Kayaks Greg (I will confirm that), with the other DART-nuun team’s Cyril not far behind him.
From here, teams regrouped and headed out under the scorching midday sun for a 24 km trek straight into the desert.See All Event Posts
