Baja Travesia 2008
Day 1: Two teams fighting hard for the lead
Jacqueline Windh / 24.03.2008

The leaderboard seems to be coming back together – don’t rely on it for the earlier CPs, but from CP7 on it looks like it’s up and working. I\'ve got some pix uploaded too - check them out (click Galleries, on the left of the race report screen)The USA/Canada trio Yoga Slackers (Daniel Staudigel, Lina Augaitis, Jason Magness) are setting a blistering pace, arriving first into CP6 with DART’s number two team DART-nuun/NW Kayaks (Glenn Rogers, Sean Clancy, Mari Chandler) only 30 seconds behind them.
This was a good introduction to the desert for teams – a 24 km hike, mostly on bushy flats and a good part of it along a sandy road, with almost no topography – just a good sampling of the dry Baja heat.
The two front teams have a strong lead on the rest. Feed the Machine are also pushing hard, and made it to CP6 a good half hour after the two leaders. Reigning champions DART-nuun and the Swedish/USA combo ExtremeSports.dk are running neck-and-neck, 45 minutes behind the front teams. A full ranking is listed below.
I’ve seen all teams on this trek except for the front three and ExtremeSports.dk – all teams look great, lot sof smiles, no problems, other than poor team El Rey Azul, who we saw still a good 5 miles out from CP6 at nightfall. They’d run out of water, and flagged us down on the road to donate a drop to them.
Team Hilarious were all smiles and chatter, as usual – that IronWoman Nicole is strong! Early on she was towing Claire, and later she was towing Christina. See All Event Posts
