Baja Travesia has broken new ground with this year’s all-women category. Although only two female teams entered this year, this event has done a lot to encourage the participation of women in AR. First women’s prize was $2000, and the category would have paid down to third place if more teams had entered.

Organizers Paul, Karen and Antonio went to a lot of effort to make this a prize-paying category, and were a little disappointed that more women did not step up for this race. “We had so much interest, says Paul. “So many women, including the big names, were contacting us. But they chickened out!

Well, the women who did show up sure showed their toughness. Team Eastern Mountain Sports Exxtreme put out a flawless performance, with the navigational skills of Melissa Coombs (which we saw were crucial to survive this race) backed by the strength and experience of Jennie Johnson and Jennie Shultis. Congratulations to these inspiring women!

And the other female team Hilarious, in spite of not finishing, was no less impressive. Three days into the race, after injuring her leg on the first day yet continuing anyway, Christina Moon was in too much pain and finally had to call it quits. She later found out her leg was broken – another tough chick, to withstand that much pain to continue on a broken leg for three days. Team-mates Claire Thompson and Nicki Rehn showed such strength in trying to keep going without her. Tough luck, you Hilarious girls... we all hope you heal quickly, Christina.See All Event Posts
