What\'s Involved?

Taking place on the remote islands of Islay and Jura on the West Coast of Scotland, the British Ultra will undoubtedly be the toughest multi stage foot race within the United Kingdom.

The event will see athletes compete over 6 days taking in high mountains, exposed coastal cliffs, isolated tracks/trails in one of the more remote and certainly most extreme environments that Britain has to offer.

Who is behind it?

The race is being jointly organised by Dave Scott and Martin Like. Dave is a veteran of many ultra events and wilderness adventures and is the race director of the Gobi Challenge ultra race in Mongolia (www.sand-baggers.com).

Martin is likewise a veteran of numerous ultra races around the World from the heat of the desert to the frigid cold of the Arctic. Martin is also the race director of possibly the very toughest ultra event on the Planet (www.6633ultra.com) and is the founder alongside his business partner Matt Morris of the online shop Likeys (www.likeys.com).

What can the athletes expect?

Pre-race build up is now very much in full swing. Part 1 of the Likeys team left Wales Tuesday evening, taking the opportunity to get into the spirit of the event by bivvying overnight on the banks of Loch Lomond. Following a gentle start they met with Dave at the ferry port. Now safely on Islay they will be busy preparing to ensure a special arrival for the athletes and event crew alike.

Likeys, Part 2, (Martin) left Wednesday morning, he had a slight detour to pick up a host of goodies and event equipment from our premier sponsor Marmot.

The majority of the 24 athletes who will start the race will be arriving over the Friday and Saturday, with the race kicking off from Ardbeg on Sunday 25th May. This means athletes will have plenty of time to complete pre-race admin, kit checks and maybe either enjoy a dram or two from our race sponsors the distilleries of Jura and Ardbeg.

Once underway the athletes can expect to encounter some of the most adventurous and remote terrain the UK has to offer. Racing between the whisky distilleries of Islay and the Gulf of Corryvreckan whirlpool to the north of Jura, participants will take in mountain and hillside, rocky shores and sandy coves, bracken covered gorges, rivers and raised beaches created during the last ice age and much much more.
