With the competitor’s arrival conveniently staggered between 4 ferries and 1 flight the athletes have been brought to the starting camp within the grounds of the Ardbeg distillery where the allocation of tents and the necessary kit checks and other admin has been conducted. With 23 starters in this first event many of those taking part already know each other from previous escapades around the globe, but I think it is safe to say that this part of Britain has done the country proud in already impressing this band of globe trotters with its incredible scenery and array of wildlife. The race starts at 8.00am tomorrow morning at the gates of the Distillery with day 1 being a baptism of fire extending to 28 miles along some very quiet country lanes and also providing the first gentle introduction to the mountains and forests. From Day 2 onwards the event moves over to the Island of Jura where the route becomes remote yet stunning.
Before then, the athletes and support crew have just enjoyed a fantastic pre race buffet with in the storage warehouse of the distillery and have received whisky miniatures and engraved glasses kindly provided by the distillery owners.
Whilst I am sat in the car writing this report, its is simply superb to look out onto the camp ground and see both athletes and support mingling. Tempting fate I know, but this is already looking like its going to be an amazing race, and yet the best, Jura ;o) is yet to come.
As mentioned in my previous report, internet access is possibly going to get a little tricky, so don’t panic if you hear nothing. I will make every effort to post reports and from tomorrow onwards I will start to mention the characters taking part in this madness. Oh, and be assured, there are certainly some characters.
Enough waffle for now, its time to go and drink my tot of whisky and retire ready for kick off tomorrow.
