Racing In the Land of Dan McGrew

The third year of the Yukon Adventure Challenge took place in Carcross, Yukon. The event was 12-18 hours and, in past style, promised more wilderness exposure than some expedition length races. Teams of four, two, and solo competed against one another.

There is a strong sense of history in the Yukon. As an adventure racer, you can not help but think when you are suffering, somebody else has walked through in leather boots with a gold panning equipment or a caribou strapped to their back. Suck it up buttercup.

The race briefing was short: here are your UTM’s, figure out how to get there. CP’s were sparse and purposeful. Yes, there were steep cliffs, cold water, and wild animals, but anybody from the Yukon already knows that. The added bonus of it never really getting that dark, allows one to make route finding choices on the fly that would be difficult to do in darkness.
