MOMAR: Mind Over Mountain, Shawnigan Lake
A great turnout at MOMAR’s 25th race!

With over 200 racers on the start lines for the 50 km long course and 30 km short course, it was a great turnout at MOMAR’s 25th race! And it was one of the longest courses ever, with 35 km of biking on the long course - most of it on very technical trails. After a week of hot sunny weather, the morning dawned overcast and drizzly. It was a big group of racers positioning their boats at at 9am (between the short and long course, there were 215 racers registered, and 194 who started). I was surprised to see Jen Segger there, only a week and a half after finishing Badwater. Last I heard, her feet “looked like oatmeal, so I assumed maybe she was just going to fool around and do the paddle, then perhaps bike around on the course. (You know how marathoners talk about that thing called “recovery time, that so many AR racers seem to be able to do without?) But before we even had a chance to say more than a hello to one another, the start gun sounded.
The paddle was straight-forward, an out-and-back route on Shawnigan Lake of about 9 km. I had rented a Current Designs Extreme single, which is nearly 2 feet longer than the boat I normally paddle (also Current Designs, but a Gulfstream, great on the waves and in rougher conditions, but not as fast as the longer boat). The Extreme was great, and I was able to keep pace with about the middle of the pack, and stay ahead of a lot of the doubles. See All Event Posts
