Crocodile Trophy
Czech Team Dominates the First Stage
John Flynn - Crocodile Trophy / 21.10.2008

Czech team VIG+ Racing today took the first important step to fulfilling its promise at the 2008 Crocodile Trophy with an emphatic podium dominating display in the opening 80km stage from Mareeba to Irvinebank in Tropical North Queensland.Backed up this year by his entire team from the Czech Republic, two-time second place getter Ondrej Fojtik had to settle for second place in the stage as team-mate Tomas Trunschka rode ahead solo to take stage honours.
The Czech’s worked together to form a breakaway in the opening minutes of the stage and held onto the margin when the race headed seriously off-road.
Australia’s Merida Flight Centre Team gave chase, but was hampered when team member Adrian Jackson crashed heavily in rugged terrain in Australia’s outback.
Belgian Marathon Mountainbike Champion Nicolas Vermeulen showed promise with a fourth placed finish behind the dominant Czech’s.
Brief provisional results for those across the finish line so far:
