The Race Awards

After the final teams crossed the finish line there was an afternoon break for them to recover a little before the race presentation at night.

This took place in the impressive ‘race tent’ and as teams and supporters gathered outside they still didn’t know who had finished where, although the top 9 teams were called inside in advance to be told the sailing leg times would be taken out of the race, a decision which was greeted with some relief and which most thought the fairest outcome.

The prize giving was set of 21.00, which everyone now knew translates as roughly 23.00, maybe. Even so there was a big crowd waiting to be let in outside the tent. It was, at least, a little cooler out there. Once several hundred were inside it was sweltering! The format was similar to the opening ceremony with short video clips shown before the main presentation, one showing the race staff point of view, and another the social programme run with schools in the area. Teams were given postcards drawn by children all around the 3 states in which the race took place in the hope they will reply to the children when they get home.

Then came the team presentations, which oddly covered only the top 9 (although I’m told the prize money goes down to 10th). These were the only ‘result’s we got (or which have been published) as there wasn’t a listing or hand out of the full ranking, and no times were given for the top 9 either. So most teams left this morning not knowing where they’d finished, which isn\'t ideal for a World Championship. Hopefully the race website will publish all the details soon.

First onto the stage were McCain Adventure Addicts, and each team had a short interview before being given their national flags and medals, then having their picture taken. Then came Quasar Lontra (8th) and Wilsa Helly Hansen (7th). The decision to void the sailing times had a significant effect on their ranking as they suffered the most from the vagaries of the sail.

In 6th place were the US/Canadian team of Dart Nuun, who are great fans for the race. This is their 3rd time here and the team captain got a big cheer when he said Ecomotion was one of the best races ever.See All Event Posts
