Notorious Night Series - The Mighty Deerstalker
A Mighty Borders Run
Marty Lee - Top Bananas AR Team / 27.03.2009

Saturday 21st March marked the second anniversary of the now infamous 'muddy borders romp' that is the Mighty Deerstalker. Billed as a 5K and a 10K run, although the 'K' doesn't quite conform to standard SI units of measurement; indeed, conforming is the last thing that the Deerstalker tries to do.With an event village in the grounds of Traquair House, ample parking and camping areas surround the finish area, food and kit stalls and the trademark big marquee. The Deerstalker earns it's 'Mighty' status for more than just the tortuous running route complete with obstacles, but also for the party atmosphere that abounds through most of the day and night. Once the run is over the 'Mighty Beerstalker' party starts, complete with draught beer (if you are quick!) and bands.
For 2009, the event route had been slightly tweaked once more - with entry numbers up to 1500, it was still going to be new for many people though. Starting right in front of the Traquair house, the mass start heads up towards the first of the obstacles; the 5ft high wall of hay bales, providing the assembled spectators the best view of the sheer madness of those participating.
From the grounds of Traquair House, the course heads along to the bottom of the Innerleithen mountain bike trails (the often forgotten cousin to Glentress, but well worth a visit if you are in the area). Up the MTB trail along a fire road and then up the hill properly; although if you are trying to sneak up on any deer, you'll be very disappointed as by this point, the deer will have spotted the guy in the pink thong from about 2 miles away*. Deerstalker also has the reputation for some strange wardrobe decisions, and trust me, a guy in a pink thong is not a good look - from any angle....
(* The deer will have probably died from laughing or shock, so won't need stalking; burying possibly, but not stalking)See All Event Posts
