Lifestart Kayak for Kids
A Helping Hand
SleepMonsters Australia / 26.04.2009

Lifestart provides early childhood services to kids aged from birth to 6 who have an intellectual disability or developmental delay, such as Down Syndrome and Autism to ensure these special kids have the best possible start in life. The aim of the event is to raise awareness and invaluable funds for the continued support of these special kids. The event almost doubled in size this year attracting over 130 craft, 50 of which were 3 person teams and as such raised in excess of $80 000.
The event started at Blues Point on Lavendar Bay west of the Harbour Bridge and followed a 17.5km course skirting the northern foreshore via 3 Transition Areas and 6 Checkpoints to Clontarf, the latter acting more so as route markers and keeping paddlers away from high traffic areas. The 3 Transition areas at Sirius Cove, Clifton Gardens and Balmoral Beach were utilized by the teams of 3 or more to change paddlers on route to the finish line.
A beautiful clear day dawned in Sydney, and what better way to enjoy Sydney than paddle on the harbour, crews shuffled cars to the finish line and returned to Blues Point for the formalities pre start, good coffee was on hand and the masses slowly assembled, after a briefing to all assembled and welcome by Shelley Oates-Wilding (Olympic Kayaker) .
