Gathering in Vegacervera, nestled in the hills north of Leon, the teams registered for the 2009 Raid Bimbache awaited the announcement of their route with bated breath. 26 teams have registered for the race, with teams from as far away as Australia and South Africa joining the European contingent for this edition of the race, based as last year in the Castille y Leon area of northern Spain. Further north than last year’s venue, the race promises a similar feel - hard racing, fantastic scenery, and a Mediterranean experience to remember.Among the teams fancying their chances at the top spots are Blackheart.com.au, and Australian team who took top honours at the XPD race in their home country in November last year. They will be vying with last year’s second place team, Vibram Sport2000 who have roped in one of Blackheart’s fellow countymen, Jarad Kohlar to race with them.“Looking at the teams here, Kohlar commented “I think we’ve got as good a chance as any. That chance, of course, counts on them overcoming the home advantage of the vastly experienced Buff teams (‘Buff’ and ‘Buff Thermocool’), who know the area well. Buff, captained by Chemari Bustillo, will be looking to make up for their prematurely-ended race here last year, which they described as being caused by “problems mechanical, problems technical, and problems human. They were one of the four teams who exited 2008’s Bimbache after a bitterly cold and wet first night of the race, spent in the mountains on a long MTB stage.
