Day 2 - Water Babies

Pyro / 19.05.2009See All Event Posts Follow Event
After a cold paddle/trek leg (two team members paddle to a checkpoint while the other two trek along the lakeside. At the CP, they swap) and more mountain biking during the night, Multisport.Fi arrived at the transition at Boca de Huergano at around 8:30am this morning, with an hour and a half lead over their nearest rivals. They cleared their gear in an unhurried, business-like fashion, refilled their bottles, stocked up on food and headed out to collect their kayaks after only 20 minutes.

Their closest chasers, Vibram Sport2000 and Buff Thermocool arrived together at around 10am, and left the transition at the same time also. They paddled close together for the first part, a short section of river before entering the lake which would make up the body of the stage, only separating when David from Thermocool was forced to run back over the fields to the transition, having snapped the shaft of his paddle on the first set of rapids. Fortunately they had a spare paddle in their gear, so after a brief pause they were back on their way, losing only 5 minutes to the French team.

At the end of the kayak, the separation remained the same between the leaders, the Finnish team holding one and a half hours over the French, with the Spanish 15minutes behind. Following them two hours back were the McCain Adventure Addicts, who lead Team Explore by 30 minutes.

Blackheart.com.au followed in 6th place, one hour behind the Swedes, with The North Face - Forumsport, Piel Frama Ubrique - Tenerife, Sport Nature Ville-la-Grand and Absolue Raid - AG2R rounding out the top 10.

Both Team Explore and Blackheart had a scary moment on the short river section, a fallen trunk over the river causing both teams to spill out of their boats. The Swedish team had the worse time of it, Viktoria Wallin panicking and grabbing the bough, leading to her boat being trapped momentarily by the force of the water. She and Mikael Lindnord were forced to work their way to the bank, following the river as their teammates chased the free-floating boat and equipment.See All Event Posts
