Coast Mountain Sports Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race 001
The View from the Front

The arrival of spring usually means it is time for my usual trip to the coast to take part in a Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race. Many people I meet at the race are surprised that I make the effort to come all the way from Revelstoke for this one day race. There was a moment this year as I sat in ridiculous traffic on the Trans Canada around Surrey that I wondered the same thing. The answer though is two-fold. Bryan always put on a fun and challenging race and it has always been a goal of mine to get fast enough to win this race. So every spring I train hard and come out to test my fitness. It took six years of trying but this season I finally managed to achieve my goal of winning an overall MOMAR title. I don\'t know if I am in fact getting faster or if MOMAR is adding more navigation into the mix - probably a bit of both. Either way I\'ll take it.Going into the race my training was going well and I was confident about my chances. It looked like my main competition would be Gary Robbins (ultra runner who had won multiple times previously with his partner Todd), John Markez (long successful history in AR), Norm Thibault (previous MOMAR champ) and Shane Ruljancich (elite road runner and previous MOMAR podium finishes). I thought I could outnavigate Gary and Norm, I could out hike John and I could outride Shane. The competition would be good and the results would depend on how the course was laid out. I was glad to see that after not planning to have an orienteering section course designer Jen Segger threw one in at the last moment.See All Event Posts
