The Role of Honour

Rob / 27.10.2003See All Event Posts Follow Event
With a whole range of classes, of different lengths, and mixed, veterans, ladies and generation categories in each, hundreds of pairs taking part were racing for prizes of one sort or another. In the Score classes Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates could be won for reaching different points targets, and even those not looking for any prizes or certificates still wanted to say ‘I’ve completed KIMM 2003’, to wear the T-shirt with pride.

The border hills proved tougher than expected, and everyone who got round was a winner, but here’s our run down of who won what awards in the various categories. (It’s unofficial as the results checking process is still going on.)

Elite

49 Starters – 29 Finishers

Steve Birkinshaw and Morgan Donnelly retained their title finishing with a big winning margin. With 5 wins under his belt maybe Steve is thinking of chasing Mark Seddon’s record 9 wins? His next challenge is a very different one though, he’s off to Namibia to see if he’s ‘Tough Enough for the SAS’ with the BBC. Morgan will be competing next in the Mild Seven Outdoor Quest in Borneo with team Saab Salomon.

The top ranked veteran team were Adrian Belton and Mark McDermott in 14th place overall. It was the first time they’d run the KIMM since winning it 12 years ago – maybe they left the title defence a bit late!

Lewis and Jane Grundy were the winning mixed pair, and only one other mixed pair made it around the course – the Danish duo of Maria Hoeyer and
Ulrik Staugaard, who’s time was a valiant 18.53.37. Only one ladies pair completed the course, Liz Cowell and Helen Jackson, who finished just as it got dark, in 18th place overall. They even punched an extra checkpoint on the way around.

A Class

93 Starters – 46 Finishers (& that was on the shortened course!)

Julian Simpson and Alastair Buckley also had a good winning margin (23 minutes) in the ‘A’ Class, though they were not taking anything for granted. When he crossed the line Julian asked if they’d won and when he got the answer ‘Yes’ said, “Thank God for that!

Top veterans were Mark Saunders & William Darby, Neil Northrop & Helen Palmer were the leading mixed pair, mixed veterans winners were Keith Richards & Gill Harris, and the ladies winners were Mandy Goth & Sue Roberts.See All Event Posts
