Huairasinchi’s Race Overview
Natalia Greene / 28.02.2011

Huairaisinchi’s press conference successfully took place this past Thursday, February 24th, with the participation of the organising team, and the representatives of its main sponsor, Chevrolet. Two members of team Absolute Raid Rodes who arrived early for the race attended the press conference and were interviewed by the local journalists.

Team registration will be Friday, March 4th during the whole day and in the evening the organization has scheduled the race briefing where the route will finally be revealed. For this day, all the teams will have to be present to complete the registration process: prove their ropes and orienteering skills, show their mandatory gear and learn about Huairasinchi’s safety and security standards, among other requirements.

Teams will also support the students from the communities that the race will pass through by donating school supplies during registration.

Most importantly, Huairasinchi’s teams already have a race overview to begin their planning.
Take a look at the details for the 10 legs:

Leg 1, 24.3 km of biking
Leg 2, 38.2 km of trekking
Leg 3, 87 km of biking
Leg 4, 13 km of trekking
Leg 5, 24.2 km of biking
Leg 6, 21.8 km of trekking
Leg 7, 100 km of biking with ropes system in between
Leg 8, 14.4 km of trekking
Leg 9, 23 km of kayaking with a rope system in between
Leg 10, 6.6 km of running
TOTAL: 352.5 km

Racers should expect biking legs to have mud, dirt, paved stone and pavement. Kayaking will be down a river, with sections with a lot of water and depth, and other sections with less water, although, depending on the weather, everything can change.

Huairasinchi’s teams are already arriving into Quito. Four international teams have arrived a week before the race starts, mainly to acclimatize in the beautiful surrounding scenery and high snow-capped volcanoes the city has, and also to take the chance of some tourism since some racers are visiting Ecuador for the first time. The teams that have taken this precaution are definitely going to have an advantage over teams arriving right before the race.

There are the 4 members of Adventure Racers DK, the 4 members of Absolute Raid Rodes, 2 members from Thule Adventure Team and the complete Skandia team. The rain has stopped, and this weekend there was a clear and sunny sky with a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes such as Antisana, Cayambe and Cotopaxi where some teams have decided to acclimatize. Let’s hope the good weather continues next week. The weather forecast is very variable in Ecuador!

Lets the adventure begin!
