The sixth edition of the Transmarocaine started this morning in front of the kasbah Taourirt at 09:00 on the dot. (Everything up until this point has been spot on time, be it press briefings, racers briefings or verifications).

The recent heavy rains has meant that the original race route has been somewhat modified on the first section. What was meant to be a trail along the lakefront outside Ouarzazate has been modified to take racers 5.5 kms along avenue Mohamed V towards the lake.

At the briefing last night we were told to expect heavy rains and at 02:00 the skies opened up. In the dawn hours strong winds dispatched of the rain and the decision was taken to cancel the 10.5 km canoe section. The safety of the racers was compromised with force 4 winds howling through the plateau and several novice teams have no canoe experience. The next canoe section won’t be until the last day of the race.

With the cancellation of the canoe, racers had to run the length of the section on the road to Skoura; a long stretch on open roads which was hard on the joints according to several racers. The group naturally spread out with Raid 74.org taking the lead. A medical evacuation was necessary early in the game as a member of team 2, OCP 2, who has been suffering from extreme gastric distress for the past two days, fainted. He is currently under observation in the hospital and it is unlikely that the race doctor will allow him to continue.
See All Event Posts
