Finish Line Race Stories

Rob Howard/Expedition Africa / 13.05.2011See All Event Posts Follow Event
As the final teams approach the finish line Race Director Heidi Muller has been talking to the competitors from Expedition Africa and picked out the early stages as taking a particular toll on the teams. “Clearly the first 35km beach run took its toll on the teams. ITB and blisters were the common problems and ensured that teams battled further on into the race.

“ As the teams come over the finish they share their war stories with the other finishers. Its now early Friday morning and we wait for the 9th placed Team Energy to finish. Then the rest of the field is just surviving the course and the teams are doing very well with only 5 unofficial teams in the field. They all have 1 team member who pulled out or short-course themselves due to injury and or technical problems.

After their finish teams commented as follows;

Nicholas Mulder -Team Cyanosis “Adventure racers are certainly a privileged bunch of people; we experience so many things in such a short space of time. It is also funny how quick one forgets the tough times during a race when you hit that finish line. Incredible organization and incredible scenery, one can see that al lot of time and effort has been put in to the race route and TA's.

“This is a true expedition style event; you need to be as hard as nails just to finish this race. To my team mates, Jane; Nic & Nathan well done for keeping us competitive despite the injuries we faced. Congratulations to Merrell and to Accelerate for completing the podium places and to every team that has finished and to every team that is still out there heading to the end of Expedition Africa 2011. We will be back for sure in 2012 …

Tatum Prins - Team Merrell Adventure Addicts Sitting here now at race head quarters makes the whole race feel a bit like a dream..You really need the time to process everything you go through. From the start we wanted to give this race a good go and knew we would have to race hard and fast to finish where we wanted to. Besides the one nav error and not taking enough water on the beach hike our race went brilliantly.

A big thank you to Kinetic for reviving the AR scene in South Africa. It is just what it needed, what we needed.a true expedition race. It was so well organized and such a great course. We are a special (some say crazy) breed of people that feed off the highs and lows that only AR can throw at you. It is so awesome to be surrounded by these like minded people, to be able to explore our surroundings and experience all that we do. A massive thank you has to go out to my team for all that they do and for all that they are to me. LONG LIVE AR! Huge well done to everyone!See All Event Posts
