Landslide Forces the SALOMON 4 TRAILS 2012 to Find an Alternative Route for Stage 2

Munich, July 2nd, 2012 – In two days the second edition of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS will take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from July 4-7, 2012. A route section has been closed by the authorities for an indefinite time due to a landslide and it still can't be released again. Therefore the organizer, the PLAN B event company, had to choose an alternative route for the second stage from Ehrwald to Imst. This change brings the four day stage race to a new overall distance of 152,1 kilometers and 9376 meters altitude difference ascent and 8232 meters descent.
Stage 1: From Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Ehrwald
The first day of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS shows the participants clearly what they can expect from the route in 2012: alpine atmosphere. On trails, full of variety, the participants will run along the Zugspitz massif to Ehrwald. Six ascents and descents with all in all 2410 meters altitude difference ascent and 2113 meters altitude difference descent must be mastered.
Stage 2: From Ehrwald to Imst
Due to a landslide and the resulting active danger of falling rocks in the area of the Grünsteinscharte the hiking trail over the Grünsteinscharte has been closed by the authorities. That is why there will be an alternative route over the Marienbergjoch (1789m) at the second SALOMON 4 TRAILS. From Obsteig the trail continues on the original route. This change shortens the stage to 39,5 kilometers with 2288 meters altitude difference ascent and 2505 meters altitude difference descent.
Stage 3: From Imst to Landeck
The third stage offers not only incomparable trails on over 2000 meters altitude but also a spectacular alpine panorama as well as the traverse of three peaks. 31,8 kilometers stage length, 1834 meters altitude difference ascent as well as 1794 meters altitude difference descent are a challenge for the body and the soul on the third race day.
Stage 4: From Landeck to Samnaun
The last stage is at the same time the supreme stage of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS and it has some superlatives to offer. With a distance of 44 kilometers it is not only the longest stage but it is also the biggest vertical height with its 2844 meters altitude difference. On the Ochsenscharte (2787 m) a spectacular view awaits the participants. The participants will reach here the highest point of the stage race.
Around 400 participants are expected next week in the starting place Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) to cross the Alps in four days on foot. The route brings the runners over Ehrwald (AUT), Imst (AUT) and Landeck (AUT) to their finishing target in Samnaun (CH).
Both ambitious amateur runners and high profile professionals such as the former mountain race world champion, Thomas Lorblanchet (FRA), will be at the starting line. The trailrunning elite covers averagely 15 kilometers in an hour and 1000 meters altitude difference and it needs about 3-4 hours for a stage. A remarkable achievement especially since the trail leads partly over high alpine and technically challenging passes and it is set for the most part above the 2000 meters point.
