Into the Archipelago

Endurance Quest / 26.07.2012See All Event Posts Follow Event

The third day of EQ2012 started after a long night of biking, swimming and climbing. The second half of the long biking section has had many highlights such as the teams having to swim (or float) 5 km down Kiskonjoki river with their bikes on Finnfoam "floating devices", abseiling and jumaring up and down the Tammisaari water tower, and exploring the bunkers on the island of Storaholmen.

Omjakon has managed to maintain the strong lead  it created during the first stages of the biking section and is now the first team to leave TA11 in Syndalen after a mandatory 2 hour rest period.

Multisport.fi is in second place ca. 1,5 hours after Omjakon and is just nearing the end of the rest period. ScandinavianOutdoorStore.com, RedFox and Agde raid aventure-LSN are all still going strong 2 hours from Syndalen.

Omjakon is now sailing away and making good progress towards CP98 where the journey will continue towards TA13 by kayak though it seems like the sails are not giving a great amount of help to the team in these minor winds.

Only approximately 18 hours remains of the race as the third part of the competition has started with Omjakon departing from Syndalen by kayak. The teams are faced with a true test of endurance: 62 km of kayaking through a thousand islands in the breathtaking Tammisaari archipelago national park.

The nonstop kayaking will last a minimum of 7 hours for the top teams and will prove to be physically and mentally very challenging for all teams, especially for the teams kayaking at night.

Navigation in the archipelago is difficult as small mistakes can cause big time losses with such long distances, and during the night these mistakes are greatly emphasised
