Canadian Adventure Racing Expo
Adamson and Fa’avae Team Up For CARE
Rob / 21.04.2004

The Canadian Adventure Racing Expo (CARE) in Toronto is a unique event, it’s the only show of it’s kind absolutely devoted to AR. As such it’s gathered many of the race organisations in Canada under one roof, and there are a lot of them as the sport is thriving. And that means the gear manufactures and retailers will be there, focusing entirely on product for AR, and they will no doubt be getting the chance to listen to racers opinions on how to improve it! A pocket here and a drain hole there …That alone would be enough to get a lot of teams along to the show, but there is more on offer – 5 expert speakers, including the captains of the world’s top two teams, and a race the day before the show as well.
The two biggest names at the show are Nathan Fa’avae and Ian Adamson. Fa’avae is the captain of Team Seagate.com, and has wins at Southern Traverse and Eco-Challenge behind him, and Adamson has led teams to wins in just about every major there is. The two teams they lead have had some close contests over the last couple of years, and will no doubt do so again in 2004.
Adamson’s media work on T.V. and in print, and roles as Race Director for several big events, including The Mild Seven Outdoor Quest, give him a unique insight into all aspects of the sport, but at a special 4 hour workshop he’ll be speaking and coaching on “The Secrets of Successful Adventure Racing. Fa’avae’s subject on the Friday before the show is “AR … The Way of the Kiwi and he’s known as a forthright and philosophical speaker.
It’s a unique chance for a small group of racers to learn at first hand from the two most successful competitors in adventure racing, and both will also be giving shorter presentations on the day of the show. For the wider AR audience who can’t get to the show we’ll have interviews here on SleepMonsters with both.
Two lucky teams will even get to race with them at the ARC event on the day before the show. It’s the first ARC race of the year and starts from Humber College, the venue for the Expo. It may also be the only time Adamson and Fa’ave will both race in the same sprint event!
There are 3 other exceptionally experienced speakers in the show line up as well. Dave Norona is an elite athlete in 9 sports, and has raced all over the world with a variety of teams, he’s known as an inspirational and lively speaker. Bill Trayling has spent 8 years on Canada’s national kayak team and will be running paddling coaching and Q&A sessions in the pool, while Kevin Wallace will be taking a practical look at ‘The AR Bike’.
It’s an exceptional line-up, and we’ll have interviews, news, race and competition results from the show here on SleepMonsters.See All Event Posts
