Feeling the Heat - Day 2 of Cowboy Tough

Randy Eriksen / 20.07.2013See All Event Posts Follow Event

After fighting the rain for most of the mountain bike ride between Laramie and the End of Day Transition, the top teams all got some good sleep and started racing again at 6 am.

Today started with a 25 mile bike, followed by a 10 mile trek to the canoe leg on Simone Lake. Low water levels on the lake resulted in a shortened paddle, but it is still expected to take more than 4 hours. First in the water was the 2 person team, Untamed New England.

Tecnu Adventure Racing were second less than 10 minutes later. 3rd were Dart Nuun, followed by Yogaslackers/Gearjunkie. By the time the teams put in, the medical staff was concerned about the heat so they gave each racer a bottle to help them stay hydrated.

After the paddle the racers have another 8 mile trek with 20 optional CPs and tonights TA is The "Miracle Mile" area near ...  the middle of nowhere.

The middle of the field racers on the trek are catching the full weight of the Wyoming summer heat. It will be close to 100 degrees today and the wind is picking up, which can cause 2-4 foot waves on the lake.

While the top teams cleared the course some of the later teams were still coming in to the End of Day TA at 6am. These teams had until 8am to leave for the day and as of mid-day Friday all the teams and racers are still having fun.

Day 3 will be the "Cowboy" toughest day of the race. There will be over 50 miles of riding and the handcart challenge where the racers will be pushing a Mormon handcart for 5 miles and looking for more CPs.

It will be interesting to say the least.
