The foursome of Kevin Wallace (who raced in the Raid the North Extreme event here last year), Scott Ford, John Markez (all from Toronto) and Sara Vlug (New Brunswick) led at every one of the dozen checkpoints. They had to fend off a stiff early challenge from Subaru Canada, and some late pressure from Thunder Bay’s Balanced Foot Care team (second overall in 21:07) and Southwestern Ontario’s Canadian Hardcorps (third at 21:14).

A wrong turn on the second biking portion of the event doomed Subaru’s chances. They were about 15 minutes behind Gears nine hours into the race; but the navigational error in the third leg of the race cost them almost three hours.

Team R2B2 – Norm and Trish Anthony, Bob Nault and Leila Jewett – led the contingent of four Atikokan teams, and finished eighth overall at 27:06. Team Tramin (Russ and Marilyn Desserre, Gord Sheppard and Sean Hannon – 10th at 28:18) and the Old and the Restless (Dave Maynard, Holly Armstrong, Dan Fotheringham and James Burns – 11th at 28:58) weren’t far behind.

Most Avoid Bush Whack

The race started at 4 a.m. Saturday, with a long bike ride up to the old Steep Rock air strip, then east to Sapawe Lake near Atikokan Forest Products. From there it was on to Highway 11, to Highway 633, up to Kawene, then onto bush roads all the way around Eva Lake, then back south again (between Eva’s Northeast Bay and Nydia) to Highway 11.
